Agricultural Science, Associate Degree, AAgS


Program Description

Code 303 - 60 Credits

The Associate in Agricultural Science is primarily designed for students enrolled in our partner program with the Institute of Agricultural Technology at Michigan State University (MSU). Through this agreement, we are delivering innovative programs that develop career-ready graduates through intensive, practical learning and development of leadership skills that serve agricultural needs in our local communities. Completing students are eligible to receive a Kellogg Community College associate degree as well as an industry-recognized certificate from MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Industry-specific internships are required and expose students to current career opportunities available. Students completing the program may also receive priority transfer to MSU College of Agricultural and Natural Resources. Requirements for the Degree

  1. A minimum of sixty (60) credit hours earned, excluding BIOL, TSEN, TSMA, TSRE courses with numbers less than 100, and MUSI 100 .
  2. A cumulative grade point average at KCC of at least 2.0.
  3. A minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours must be completed at Kellogg Community College.
  4. A maximum of 75% of the credit hours required for a degree may be documented and transferred to KCC.
  5. All Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree must complete the FYS 101 - First-Year Seminar   course with a grade of a C or higher. This degree requirement can also be achieved by earning a degree from an accredited institution or transferring 24 or more credits from another accredited institution applicable to their degree. Service-Learning Requirement

Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree will be required to complete a service-learning experience. The final grade in the course must qualify for academic credit in order to receive the service-learning endorsement. Please contact an Academic Advisor for courses that offer a service-learning experience, or search in the class schedules.

Program Learning Outcomes


  1. Communication: Students will demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and professionalism evidenced by engaging in critical reading and listening, and by producing coherent written and oral work appropriate to audience and task that are necessary for academic and career success.
  2. Cultural/Social Awareness: Students will develop awareness and understanding of cultural and social diversity, examine historical and contemporary cultural traits impacting their civil society at the local, national, and global level and recognize how the diversity of individuals and/or groups impact social, economic, and/or political power.  
  3. Business and Information Literacy: Students will understand concepts in economics and leadership development applicable to agricultural careers. Students will demonstrate the ability to locate, organize, store, retrieve, evaluate, synthesize, annotate, and document information from print, electronic, and other sources in preparation for solving problems, making informed decisions, and preparing the written/oral communication necessary for academic and career success.
  4. Engagement/Service Learning: Students will understand the interactions between members of a community and the social and political institutions that serve that community. Students will analyze their ability to effect change through social and civic responsibilities and enhance their learning by applying course content through service experience in the community.
  5. Critical Thinking/Analytical Reasoning/Creativity: Students will have the ability to analyze and evaluate information or evidence to form inferences, identify general theories, draw conclusions, make decisions, and solve problems from a variety of perspectives.
  6. Scientific Reasoning: Students will demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry, biological sciences, and quantitative analysis through their ability to apply scientific processes, procedures, data, and/or evidence to evaluate, analyze, solve problems and, draw valid conclusions.

Required General Education Courses


A minimum of thirty-four (34) credits required for the Agricultural Operations or Food Processing, Technology and Safety certificate must be reverse transferred from Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Science (CANR), including any required elective credits in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources approved by the Program Coordinator in the Institute of Agricultural Technology.
